Best place to find very last minute holidays?

I am off next week starting Monday 8th August and would like a short break away, im thinking some european city for 4 nights but want to spend as little as possible really without it being a horrible place!

I was thinking along the lines or rome, paris, barcelona etc. and have also looked at beach holidays for a week, yet they dont seem that cheap.

Have the days gone now where you could get a very very cheap holiday a few days before departure?

Several reasons going against you here, school holidays and 1 of the peak weeks in the school hols, it is usually low cost carriers or scheduled flights going to cities and these are normally cheaper booking early not late, there could have been a few charter flights and packages to get rid of that may have been a little cheaper but theres going to be a lot of people wanting these now hotels4u has gone bust, so i don't think you have much chance of getting a bargain at the moment.
