The CRB check will be done locally and you will not have to involve your local police station.
Oh - didn't know that. I will have a look into it - thanksLydia

You could:
*become a school governor - http://www.schoolgovernors-oss.co.uk/
*help lonely, isolated, elderly people http://www.contact-the-elderly.org/
I volunteer with CtE and am applying to become a governor so can vouch for the ease of asking stupid questions for both orgs.
You can also look at https://www.timebank.org.uk
*How about looking to volunteer at a local nursing home / sheltered accomodation / museum/history centre / theatre or attraction?
*A really useful starting point for me was my local council and social services. I had a good chat after surfing the list of charities and activities they fund for a clearer idea of what was involved.
Re CRB checks, while there may be a waiting list, don't let that stop you from applying to something of interest. Most organisations that have contact with the public will ask for a check or a character reference while they are sorting their systems out."This is a forum - not a support group. We do not "owe" anyone unconditional acceptance of their opinions."0 -
The National Trust has a lot of volunteers who do very varied work.
The main volunteer info is here:
http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-trust/w-volunteering.htm
but there are also sites maintained by local area NT Volunteer groups,
here are two examples:
http://www.cntv.org.uk for Cambridge area
http://www.wyntv.org.uk/ for West Yorkshire
PS this may help you contact for your area:
