M&S sale coming up...

Just a word of caution guys,
I was at the Gateshead Metro Centre store last Wednesday and purchased a pair of denim shorts for £6. I also got my dad a pair for the same price. My dad tried his pair on at home, but they didn't fit.
I tried to return them to the Hartlepool store on Saturday, where I was denied any form of refund/exchange. I never realised, but on the receipt, under the item it said "not eligible for returns or exchange." I was not informed of this at the time of sale.
I have been in contact with M&S Customer Services, but seem to be going round in circles. Apparently the shorts were not in the general sale, but were classed as "Manager Reductions" and as they had been reduced significantly, they are non-returnable. M&S say that they do encourage their advisors to tell customers items are not returnable, however this is not always possible and they do display signage instore.
Metro Centre store is currently under refurbishment, and currently looks like the Industrial Zone from The Crystal Maze. I could not see any signage instore at all.
I received another email back from customer services, who insist that signs are instore regarding policies. They also state that staff write on receipts so customers are aware that they cannot be returned (funny, because mine hasn't been written on!)
So I'm just awaiting another reply from them. I would love to know how you can tell the difference between items in a "sale" and items that are "manager reducations."
So if you are going to the M&S sale, enjoy, but maybe worth checking out the returns policy beforehand. Me, on the other hand, will be keeping well away.0 -

They have signs at my local store telling you that Clearance items with a red sticker cannot be returned, Sale items can be returned until they become Clearance items.0 -

This is a bit odd time wise as I just got out a present to wrap for my mum and it was £5 down from £19.50 in the 2nd/3rd/50th sale earlier on in the year and the receipt in the bag says **No refund of exchange give** typed under the 2 things I bought. Also I remember the SA telling me. I can kinda understand when they are selling things so cheap they don't want to have to ship them off to their clearance branches months later. I got a swimming costume for £2 too. Unfortunately an annoying costly problem in your case. Guess the moral is try them on in store or risk it.0 -

I think this code was person specific? i.e. it was a long code. (Otherwise I would have shared already).0 -

the SA st my local do tell time and time again that you cannot bring it back but then i usually buy things that are £1 or £3 in manager's reduction.
the difference between sale items and manager's reduction/clearence items is that clearence items are stamped with a "S" shaped stamp. If not stamped already the SA will stamp it at the time of sellig it to you. Its also mentioned on the receipt that no refund or exhnage given.
I bought two shirts in last sale and SA said you cannot bring it back. ?But they were not stamped and there was nothing on the receipt also. I took the shirts back and was given refund straightaway.
Anyway just be a bit more careful with their funny refund policy. Hope your matter be resolved soon0 -
What do you think the chances are any schoolwear will be in it? I usually buy in the 3 for 2 but they don't seem to be doing it this year and I was going to buy them this weekend as our schools go back on the 17th August but might hang off in hope.0

Does anyone know if any homeware will be included? I'm in the process of buying my first house, and hardly have a thing so if I could get a few bargains, that would be nice
I'm particularly eyeing up the red poppy dinner service! 0 -
