Restoring old hardwood furniture???

Hi there, im about to try my hand at buying-restoring-selling old and unusual peices of furniture.
I have done a few pieces in the past for my own home (they need re-doing) lol
I know the basics of stripping, preparing etc but I never do get the finish quite right.
Can anyone recommend good quality finishing products, paints, varnishes etc... or do you know of a helpful website?
Thanks
