Does Travel insurance cover trip that has already been booked?

Today I booked our family Summer holiday.
So...booked on 3rd August. Due to travel 22nd August.
I now discover, that my previous annual insurance ran out 2 days ago :-(
So I will purchase a new annual travel insurance policy tomorrow.
However, will the new policy cover the holiday that I have 'already' booked?
In particular the cancellation cover?
Let's say, something happens on 20th August, meaning some or all of my party have to cancel the holiday. Would the insurance pay out?
Or would the Insurance company say that I had no insurance when the trip was booked?

Yes it does. It just means you are not covered for anything that happens between booking and taking out insurance.
This and other boards are littered with tales of people who "hadn't got around" to taking out travel insurance after booking only for a close family member to become seriously ill and so they weren't covered.0
