Tenants rights once put notice in

My 6 month tenancy is up on 8th September and I am aware I need to put my one months notice in before/on 7th August.
My query is im waiting to hear from a new job which would involve moving quickly so need to put my notice in,however once I have done this if i dont get the job can I withdraw my notice and then continue living in the rented property?
I have spoken to the letting agency who have said I can put notice in and then withdraw it but have also said I can put it in once I know so example put notice in on 11th August leave by 12th September and just pay the extra rent due for them few days,is this right as seems odd to me?
Thanks for any advice.

Whatever the agent has agreed, get it in writing, as verbal agreements have a habit of disappearing into thin air when you least expect it. If they will and that suits you, then fine.
However, there are other ways you can play this situation:
You do not actually need to give any notice at all to leave the property at the end of the fixed term. It is of course, courtesy to do so, but so long as you pay rent up until the last day and leave before midnight on that day, you can drop the keys through the agent's door and disappear into the sunset.
If you choose to stay after this fixed term, your tenancy becomes a statutory periodic tenancy, whereby the notice requirements change and you need give 1 months notice to leave (LL/LA need to give you 2 months). If you wanted to stay on indefinately, this may suit your needs, so long as you can give 1 month's notice when you do need to move.0
