I come from a country where we broke up for 3 months-summer holiday was all about being bored and term time about working really hard academically. Also over summer it was so hot, you could not concentrate on anything, you felt sleepy most of the time (at least I felt). With global warming though it feels like autumn there, they haven't seen really high temperature since the beginning of July.

I wouldn't want the summer holidays to change yet every year I hear parents moaning and moaning about them and saying they should be changed.

Personally I love having the 6 weeks with my son to enjoy ourselves. He always matures over it too which I'm sure is normal for many kids,it gives them time to explore, enjoy and develop :) I don't care if it's expensive, there are more important things in life!

I've always felt that children need the long break to get back to just being children, rather than being stuck inside at a desk for most of the day being subject to deadlines. Surely there is plenty of time for that later?
I remember the summer holidays as long and sunny (although living in Scotland I doubt it was always like that!), playing out all day and only going home for meals/ when the street lights came on. For my sons it has been a similar experience. 14 year old DS2 comes home to eat and is off out again on his bike with a group of mates who spend their days building ramps and jumps on the waste ground. Yes, they could hurt themselves, yes they egg each other on to do more scary jumps, but isn't that what growing up is all about?
Childhood should not be something that just gets in the way of parental work plans.

I was in Scotland as a younger child also - the days were long. I was up in the North East and in the height of summer it never really went properly dark all night long!

And you should see some of the pics of my brother and his mates from back in the eighties with their BMX bikes. They are hanging upside down off wires that they've strung between trees and all sorts! Not a helmet between them - nor any brain damage or long lasting injury either I should add.

And that is what its all about these days unfortunately. I can understand how much of a pain it is but surely no-one wants their kids at desks because its easier or cheaper? Let kids be kids. They are definitely under more stress at schools nowadays with constant assessments.
