Cheap all in one printer that doesn't fleece you on ink?

Hi all,
My first post here although I've been lurking for quite a while
Can anyone recommend a cheap all in one printer (or a regular printer) that doesn't gobble ink? All these cheap printers are a con, they use ink like it's going out of fashion. It's obviously the way the manufacturers offset the low cost of the printers.
The printer is for a friend and she wont use it much, just printing off the odd receipt there is little point her paying for an expensive printer just to get marginally lower ink costs.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Check the Epson range, click ink and accessories to get the cartridge numbers

Once you find a suitable model(s), check these sites to see if they have compatibles, there are other sites but this is just to see if they have compatibles

Check pricerunner etc for printer prices, dismiss pixmania, search MSE for reasons

Post the make and model you have decided on to see if anyone has had a problem or can confirm it is a good printer
If it will only be used for the odd receipt, is an all in one necessary, I ask because the lower end printers have scanning resolutions only slightly above the quality of brass rubbings, so if scanning is not important, check single function printers0 -
Might it be worth her considering a mono laser printer if she doesn't print regularly or need to print photos etc? You can get cheap ones for around £40 with toner supplied. Yes, the toner costs a bomb but it will last her ages (usually getting around 2.5k pages from the initial cartridge supplied free with the printer) and unlike inkjets, it doesn't dry up nor does the printer use up ink everytime you turn it on to clean the print heads so in the long run you probably won't need to replace it for absolutely ages.0

Check to see the compatible ink and toner prices on www.choicestationery.co.uk - Used them for years, cheap and reliable - go via www.topcashback.co.uk to save even more.My Mind wanders, if found please return.0

Amazon have the epson sx515w (wireless) all in one refurbished for £48 including del, and this uses v. cheap compatibles.
Know of a few of these in use and all reports good (except slow to do photocopying - though far outweighed by good points)
They are hard to source as now Epson seem to have cottoned on to compatible cartridges and newer models use different inks that so far are only available from Epson.0 -

I bought this very one from Amazon(warehouse) last week for £34 (aparently customer returns but this one had never even been opened), two days later it was up to £67 so keep checking their prices... Certainly seems to be the model to go for as far as cheap cartridges go.... :beer:Not a newbie - my past has disappeared !!!0 -

they don't even cost that much to buy. I paid about £35 for my LaserJet 1018 at the back end of 2007. I replaced the toner at the beginning of July and it cost me £7.35 delivered.0 -
HP Photosmart Wireless e-All-in-One Printer on sale in Argos for £39.99
If you miss out on these then Ebay has a few at a similar price.
Replacement cartridges appear to be cheap assuming it's the CN245 version.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
I must admit I'm reluctant to advise her to use compatible ink tanks after having bad experiences with them myself. On my Epson RX600 I tried a full set of compatible cartridges from stinkyink.com and it just clogged up my printer. I was under the impression that Epson printers don't do well with compatible cartridges??
I will ask her if she really needs an all in one and I will suggest a mono laser printer, thank you. Does anyone know if 3rd party toners and drums are generally ok to use with laser printers?
Thanks for those links Santer. I will check them out although I think I need to speak to her and narrow down what she really needs.
