If it is the older style its fairly simple and short in terms of confirming how you know the person, how long and generally saying you believe them to be honest, trustworthy, reliable or any other such characteristics.
thanks for that,0 -
You're not getting marked. And if your friend is crap they wont come back onto you.
Dear XXXX
I have known XXXX XXX for X years, originally working together then socially (or whatever the situation).
In my opinion they are reliable, trustworthy and hardworking. I would recommend them to any employer.
If you require any further information please don't hesitate to contact me on 07000 000 000.

I've done as the other poster's suggested and written my own character references and got their 'sign off'. There has only been one person whose recommended me and whilst he'd only known me for about 2 years, we'd worked together during that time as colleagues so he knew how to tailor the reference to the role.0

You cannot write any negative criticism as that could constitute a libel, so if you feel the urge to do that, then decline writing the reference at all.
Absolute rubbish!
You can write anything you like as long as it is true and not intended to mislead.
You can also express an opinion providing you make it clear is is an opinion and not a statement of fact.0 -

.
why would you want a book on business letter writing when it's a character reference (usually for one of your mates)?0 -

Edit:
Cheeky answer deleted.
Proper answer is because I once looked in the library for a book on the subject and the only book I could find was a book on business letter-writing in the business section.0 -

Erm, this is a personal reference. Who in their right mind would even pass on a name of someone who is going to give them a bad reference? That itself would be reason enough not to employ lol0 -
