Does a deposit need to be protected even if no contract has been signed?

Are you in England/Wales?
Are you tenant or landlord?
Has rent been paid?
Has tenant moved into property?
If you have taken a security deposit on a tenancy, where rent has changed hands and/or a tenant has taken residence in the property, this is a verbal contract and legally deposit needs to be protected.0
