How far ahead can you book a holiday?!

Hi,
I have never been on a foreign holiday so this is all new to me. Me and my husband want to book a holiday for April 2014 to Italy (to mark our 10th wedding anniversary/belated honeymoon!)
Have the idea in my head I could book through a well established travel agent now and pay installments but I cant get quotes further than 2012 anywhere. So I think we should make a sealed jar for saving instead!

So my question is - Do people book holidays years ahead?

I'd just start saving and not worry about booking, it's a long way off.

flights only become available 9 (possibly 10) months ahead, so its unlikely you can book so far ahead for a fixed price. Easyjet /Jet2 have just launched fares for early summer 2012

to be honest for popular european destinations i book flights well ahead, as it tends to be cheaper.
Also note landing slots are not allocated 9 months ahead, so flight times are subject to change, the good thing is you can then sometimes amend your flight dates

i booked a return flight for the summer (june) in november for dubrovnik a few years ago, the sunday flight was priced at £120 each and the friday night flight was £40..
thomson amended the flight times to late afternoon a few months later, so i rang up and said i could not make the earlier flight, so they changed free of charge to the sunday flight.. Bargain

summer 2014 will go on sale approx april 2013.
you wont be able to book before then
