The fact that he said told me that I should have been turning right as I was in the right hand lane is what I'm basing the assumptions on - this is something I know for a fact as the words actually came out of his mouth.

The problem you have is that by correcting him at the roadside, you gave him a chance to think up a better story.

Bit too late for you, but for next time and/or for anyone else reading this. Either record any such conversation, or don't discuss the topic.

.........................I'm thinking about just getting the alloy refurbished at my own cost and living with a small ding in my door and accepting it as bad luck.

Sometimes that is the easier option.

Sounds to me like the ding is not a lot different to what you could get in a supermarket car park?

The repairs to the wheel shouldn't be too costly or take very long and (The ding might be able to be sucked out, possibly?).............then move on and put it behind you.

I think this goes deeper than trying to prove right from wrong as it is obviously troubling you a lot.

Heed this as a warning for the next time if ever there is one, and know what to do in future - And take photographs the next time - LOADS of 'em.
