tax credit after birth of 2nd child?

Can anyone tell me if I'm right in thinking that when our 2nd baby's due (in the next few weeks) our tax credit should double? I called the TC helpline a while back for a 'quote' based on if baby would have been born then and it doubled so am presuming that'd still be the case now? I am tempted to call them and also ask what we have to do when the new baby's born (ie sending certificates etc.) but what they say seems to change with every different person to speak to! lol!

I'm sure i read that you will get the baby element about £50 when i had DS, as far as sending in info, when i had DS they couldnt process the claim without my CB number, so maybe this will be all you need?

No it doesn't double as such. CTC for a child under one is at a higher rate (double) than an older child though and so for the first year of your baby's life you will be on that higher rate which is why your figures go up.

We had our 3rd baby in august and they asked for no child benefit number just the baby's date of birth. Top of my head we had an additional £35.00 a week.

Our money hasn't doubled as they messed up our weekly money 18 months ago , by April it will all be cleared.

If you are on the minimum, yes it doubles. If you are on more than that then you'll get extra but it's not double.
When baby turns one, your money drops (by just under £11 a week I think, but my youngest is now 3 so it may be a touch more)
  • When i just had the one dd i was getting about £45 a week ish. Now with two dds and a baby element for one, i get £90 a week which will go down to £77 a week, thats on the full amount of CTC

You don't need your CB number for your 2nd baby just ring the TC office and let them know and they will adjust straight away.
If you like it, do it.
If you don't like it, do it, you might like it ;)

You get an additional £545 for the first year of babys life (called the baby element). If you are currently getting the family element of tax credits (£545 p.a or roughly £10 a week). then yes your amount will double until baby is 1.

Whether you are entitled to more than the family element depends on things like how many children in family, household income, any disabilities.
