Hi. Could you supply a bit more information?

    Operating System?
Hub? What kind, do you mean a router?
Where exactly does the message appear (within an application, just randomly)?
When does the message appear, on startup, when trying to view a web page?
What does it take to make the message disappear, automatically, clicking OK?
Did you install any other software with the hub/router (chat software, connection monitoring software)?

This could help us put ourselves into your footsteps so we can try to troubleshoot this.

    Or un-install them.

How many windows/programs do you use/run at once ?
Turn your pc off (from the wall ) when you are not using it, over night etc. Do not use hibernate/standby, turn off completely.
Have you run the spy/maleware checks here ?

Answers to above posts will help more, amount of RAM, page file, OS etc ...

I assume this is a desktop computer. For the record, Hibernate is really best used for laptops as users usually want quick startups and immediate access to their wor. Desktop computers should only use hibernate if work tasks cannot be shut down and immediate access is required to them (e.g database/remote system access), however if the on/off access is frequent, it would be more energy efficient to leave the system on. Laptops are more energy efficient if using the hibernate mode rather than shutting down completely. However, do bear in mind that older laptops do have a tendency to crash during hibernation, especially those running Windows 98.

  • Sorry I've taken so long to reply but the system is very slow. It's a desktop operating Win 98 not sure of RAM where do I look please? I cannot now have more than one program open at a time. I cannot minimise my emails and open another program. Sometimes when I come off the internet or close BT emails and there are not any other programs open it says there is not enough memory to open a program. I do have awful lot of stuff on here and am slowly deleting it but I can't believe how much time it takes. I am also defragmenting at the moment but that has been going for ages and it says it is only 0% defragmented. I will run the spyware and also look at the learning site given above.

Just deleting files will not help with low resources unless you are running out of disk space. If so

    Clear out the c:\temp
And your internet cache files IE >> Tools menu >> Internet Options >>General Tab >> delete file
    And empty Your recycle bin........

Defrag should not be run with any other prgrammes being used .... and it is near pointless running it if you do not have any free space.
Best to reboot the PC NOW! and get any leaked memory back.....

Ah, the old Win98 defrag joy.

Restart the computer, start pressing the F8 key from the point the computer starts, at the menu, use the down arrow key to go to Safe mode. PC will start with minimal hardware/software load, defrag in this state and it'll go faster. Reboot and allow to start as normal to get back to normal operation. How much free space to you have? And how much memory? Right click on the 'My Computer' icon on desktop, click Properties. Memory is listed at the bottom. You should ideally have at least twice the amount of memory free on hard drive, allows the page file to grow and shrink as needed. You could try setting the page file to a static size, but we can come to that later.

Sounds like a memory issue rather than a program block.

98 system resources are 64k bits of memory, and the only way to free them up is to stop programs running that don't need to be run, check for malware, and get rid of buggy/leaky software/drivers.

Start by having a look at all the crap that has accumulated in your taskbar/startup..

Defragging/cleaning temp/buying more ram are good things to do, but won't cure a system resources problem, it's a limitation of the operating system not the hardware.

As others have already mentioned, either defrag in safe mode, or use the defrag.inf file on your 98 CD, which does a defrag at the next reboot.

If you want to have a quick cleanout, use https://www.ccleaner.com, but untick the yahoo toolbar option when you install it.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Also, whilst you're at it, download the free EasyCleaner from ToniArts which is a great all round program for doing general cleanup tasks. You can run the Registry cleaner, Unnecessary File Cleaner, Start Menu and Shortcuts without problems. I've been using this for years and it doesn't 'damage' your system like many others do. This won't necessarily fix your problem, but a Registry full of unused/unnecessary entries will slow the system down a bit particularly at startup.

As I said, just whilst you're on the subject of cleaning up the system.
