Hey everyone.

Just finished doing a nice, clean CV. I'm 16 and just finished school so included predicted grades (Thankfully done a few gcses early so have some actual qualifications).

Anyway, I live in Cardiff, so shall I just go into the centre and ask shops to take my CV, places ilke argos etc?

Any specific places you guys know take 16 year olds? Cheers guys.

  • I'm so happy to read how proactive you are being and how willing too - that's bound to make an impression! In terms of whether or not to go into shops to give your CV depends on what you're looking for. If it's an office job I'd find out the contact address and email them. If it's a case of wanting to work in retail, why not do what you've suggested above and then also look at the websites of some larger chains in your area - you might find they have a specific application form to use and might need someone just like you. it really depends on what you're looking for and how many hours you'd like to work as there will be some restrictions due to your age in some jobs. Good luck!

Cheers! I'll run into town now on my bike and just wonder around giving them to retailers.

You'll be competing with everyone else doing the same. Get used to hearing "no we don't have any jobs at the moment I'm afraid mate". And if you ask at shops within a shopping centre, sometimes the shopping centre itself will list jobs at stores there all in one place - and shops will direct you there.
Wanted a job, now have one.

Yes, well done for being so proactive.

My tip would be to make sure your CV reaches the right person rather than just hand it to the nearest sales assistant - especially in the big chain stores.

    Good luck!

Okay, reckon I should ask them if I could hand this to the store manager then? Shall I be a bit assertive?

I work in retail. The best thing to do if you are going to do this is ask to see a member of the management team and hand it to them, stating your interest, that way if there isn't anything available to apply for at the time they are more likely to remember you if you apply in the near future. For any larger chains, have a look online, on their own websites as many now list their vacancies on their own sites and applications are done online first before you are called in for an interview. Good luck! I did the same thing as you at your age, just keep at it. :)

Most shops have a HR person to deal with recruitment. Id go into any shop and ask if they have any jobs for a 16yo, if yes then hand a copy of your cv. How far you willing to travel for a job ? Think of any shopping centres/out of town centres that you could easily get to. Yesterday i went to 2 shops at an outlet centre and asked if they had any jobs and the 2 said to bring cv in and this morning did just that and 1 of them said there might be something soon with people going off to uni.

Nice to see your being pro active about it, places like supermarkets of which theres quite a few in cardiff, theres go outdoors(but check on line) plus might be more in cardiff or on outskirts, argos, m&s and waitrose ar eonline so check they're website.

Go outdoors have jobs at cardiff store but im not sure if they take under 18's but maybe you could pop in and ask.

Dont forget you might have to look up how many hours you can legally work with being 16 but with it the summer and your not at school you might be ok but look it up nonetheless.

Try Next. They seem to have a few part time vacancies. Don't be put off by temp jobs. If successful they would likely keep you on ...then they'll be thinking about the run-up to Christmas. Good luck :)
