How awful I am really sorry for you. If you have home insurance you might find you have access to a fraud helpline and could get advise from them. This type of thing spoils the joy of comping for us all. Hope you get it sorted.

So gutted for you, I think this is so awful for you and can understand you being stressed by it...the only thing I can offer that might help is to check if you can call the hotel via Skype to save your phone bill....even some of the larger hotel chains have Skype now,( I know the Langham in London does) so might be worth checking.

the hotel have been so unhelpful it's unbelievable. i don't think the cost of the phone calls will be too much (5.1p a minute) but when it took them 4 people and an hour to find out why the money was taken

Quick thing i wanted to say before i wander off to waste a tenner on bingo, NDL are one of the biggest prize promotion companies in the uk and have some very major top end clients so wont want any bad publicity from this itms, try not to stress and worry, i know it's easier said then done, they are not going to want to see you in this mess as it will look very bad on them, i have details of the chap that runs the company if u need it at anytime let me know here xxx

OK so we got no where with the hotel and i have so many complaints against them now that's it's ridiculous! My complaint letter is written and ready to send. It's longer and longer everyday but i'm not going to send it until i get my money back just in case...

NDL have been brilliant and managed to get so much further with the hotel and group than we did which I'm shocked by considering we were the customers! There are also data protection issues here but that's another complaint towards the hotel...

Still not got any money back but NDL are helping and have said that we will get it one way or the other eventually.

Not sure how long it will take to resolve but i'm slightly less stressed now. Still shocked that they did this without even telling us and i'll be cancelling the credit card as soon as it's cleared just in case they decide to take monre money in another 4 months!

Thanks everyone for your words of advice/support :)

Thank goodness you are getting it sorted, such a relief for you.....Do you think using a pre payment card might be of use in the future?...take one with around £20 on it( or less if you know you will never charge anything to it, I never do, always pay as I go in hotels) give that card number/details to hotel reception...I know this is shutting the stable door etc...but I think after reading your distressing story I might do it on my next holiday, win or not....

Possibly not a bad idea! i've just found another thread on here which said they took a holiday in November and paid hotel connect and they were charged again for it by the hotel in July! I really didn't realise that hotels were able to do this so long after a stay and that they aren't covered by a lot of the rules that other types of companies are. Not sure i'm ever going to book a hotel through one of these types of companies ever again (not that i did this time which is kind of the problem...) At least if i had paid for it in the first place i would be able to claim it back more easily!
