Getting off a train early
OK, so I know that if you book an advance ticket from X to Z, and the train goes via Y, it's against the T&C to get off at Y. But what are the rules if you book an open ticket from X to Z? Can you get on a train that is going to Z, but get off at Y, then get on a later train from Y to Z?

I think you can I the return leg, but not on the outward leg, however don't put your ticket in a barrier, just show the guard who will let you through the gate.0

Anytime Tickets : Outward, allowed but all travel must be complete on the day of travel unless overnight break of journey then it must be finished 12:00 so yes finishing short allowed. Return allowed.
Off Peak and Super Off Peak tickets : all down to the restriction code of the ticket this mostly effects the Outward part of the ticket, so sometimes finishing short or break of journey isn't allowed. Normally for the Return it is allowed unless a restriction code says different (very rare)Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -

Anytime Day ticket (single or return) is valid for one day only and valid as above.
Anytime Single (without Day) is valid for one day and is valid as per above rules.
The outward portion of an Anytime Return ticket is valid for five days. Unlimited Break of Journey is permitted during the period of validity. The final day of validity has the same arrangement as above.0 -
