Hi we've just got a lovely springer from a rescue:D. His thirteen.
I've already got three young springer's.
Just wanted to give this old gentleman a nice safe place to spend the rest of his life.
Here's the hard part his coat is very over grown and his ear's are very matted in place's. I've got him booked in for a trim on thursday. What would you do if he get's stressed, Ask them to stop or let them get on with it knowing he'll be more comfortable after?. I've never had an older dog before, Just want to do what right for him.

Firstly, I think it's so lovely that you've adopted an older dog.
Secondly, I'd take the advice of the groomer. Would it be best to shave his fur like a sheep?4.30: conduct pigeon orchestra...0 -
You've got 4 springers  I don't know whether you are brave or mad :rotfl:.Slimming World - 3 stone 8 1/2lbs in 7 months and now at target :j0

The groomer will know what's best to do.
Also, if you have only recently got the dog, it might be better for you not to be in the room when he's being groomed, in case he does get distressed, and then come to associate you with the distressing situation, as it might be a bit too soon for him to be reassured just by your presence.0 -

My OH used to shave our springer every 'spring' ! but she was used to it! she didnt mind it one bit. an older dog who may not have had a clipping every year may get distressed. If your old gent is like my old meg then the main prob is matting around the ears - between the yearly 'shearing' I used to use an old razor and remove the 'extra ear flaps' as I used to call them. she loved being brushed and groomed so would I do it every few months when I groomed her.
the razor I used was one my dad used to have which took a single razor blade and I would very gently hold her ear out and swipe the razor in the direction the hair grew. short strokes and if it tangled stop! give her massive cuddles and start again! Its one of the reason I wouldnt have another springer - I am way too old for all the training walking and 'grooming'! but they are fantastic dogs - meg was thick as two short planks! but she made up for it in sheer niceness! she was a sweety! and for all her 'thickness' she had a lot of tricks she loved to show off!0 -

Can't help re the dog being groomed, but as other s have said, the groomer will take the lead, and def agree not being in the room, if the dog gets distressed, your get upset, (if your anything like me), better for you to come along with the hugs.
Your an amazing person, when we lost our Springer 2 yrs ago, we looked into rescue, but unfortunatrly thou we passed all the tests, the spaniels we'd fallen for had gone, and although we wanted to give an older Spaniel a home we couldn't put my daughter throu losing a dog,... we now have a very hyper, but spolit rotten springer, how you manage 4, I take my hat off to you.
I bet they all have the life of luxury xxxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -

Awww, can't offer any advice on the grooming apart from what's been said already.
