Sound not working on vcr/dvd combo thingie

I have a Sharp vcr/dvd combo machine and it's worked fine for about three years. Now all of a sudden the sound has just gone away...
The picture is fine, it plays VHS tapes and DVDs no problem, just without any sound. Obviously this is a bit pants.
Does anyone have any ideas why this might be? I've had a good go at the cables in the back to make sure nothing has fallen out or come dislodged, but everything seems fine. I have a freeview box plugged in to the telly as well but that's working fine and has sound.

my mum got a DVD / VCR and had the same problem when she set it up. The TV was plugged into AV2 but gave a display when you chose AV1 just no sound. Changed the DVD unit to AV2 and it was fine.0
