on the actual day, can just one of us be there? We're buying the house as joint tenants, do we have to sign anything or is it ok if only I take the day off work and the missus doesn't need to be there?

Your solicitor will ring to confirm that completion has taken place and you can then go and collect your keys from the Estate Agents. No signatures needed other than the EA may ask you to sign to confirm you have collected the keys.
Good luck in your new abode!"Put the kettle on Turkish, lets have a nice cup of tea.....no sugars for me.....I'm sweet enough"0 -
As far as I know, just one. I'm not sure you even need to sign anything - just take along some photo ID to be safe and you should be fine.0

But if you're using a solicitor I don't think either of you need 'attend'.
All the documents required will have been signed in advance by buyer/seller. The solicitors transfer the funds, the TR1 is transferred, the key is released.
Whether you move in during the day, later that evening, the next day, or several weeks later is entirely up to you!
More here.
(happy to be corrected by a solicitor if attendance IS required by a buyer on the day...)0 -
You don't sign on completion day, your solicitor will usually ask you to come in and sign the contracts before exchange. When you exchange, the solicitor will add the date to the contract. So on completion day, the solicitor deals with everything - they should tell you when the funds are transferred and the sale is complete (although you will probably end up phoning to chase!), and you can collect the keys from the estate agent (or whatever arrangements you have made with vendor). No need to take a day off work unless you want to!0
