Ooh, I SO disagree. The effort is worth it because a) it's not much more effort than a normal Sunday roast and b) from that effort we get at least 3 days worth of meals, so Boxing Day and the day after are very lazy days in the kitchen.
We don't usually have turkey - this was the first year - but it wasn't overly expensive, and nor was the rest of the meal in 'per portion' terms - and I love sprouts!0 -
I served beans on toast for lunch on Christmas day this year because:
This year my DH was working all day Christmas day.
My DS (15) always visits his biological father in the morning and eats lots of chocolate then refuses lunch.
I do not eat meat.
My stepson could not come this year.
The little boy I foster would not touch most of a Christmas dinner
and: We were providing a party with buffet for approx 30 friends at 'tea time' onwards with lots of food.
The world did not end!
We went out on Boxing Day for dinner and I cooked a meal for the extended family on New Years day with all the bargains I picked up after Christmas.
Nobody should feel underpressure to cook a meal that thier family do not want or like. It is a folly. My kids enjoyed Christmas more than ever this year. They may have been served beans on toast but it was without pressure or expectations and I was available to give them my undivided attention all day.0 -
I love cooking the Christmas Dinner.:j Maybe its because my family are older (the youngest is nearly 20) and I know that the time will come when we may not all be together at Christmas. This year there were eight of us, 3 generations and it was fantastic. :j
I am vegan but wouldn't dream of not cooking a whole turkey. It was what the majority of the eaters wanted. It provided cold meals for the next two days and we have some in the freezer to use later in the year along with the turkey stock. I made sure that all that was thrown away was the bones.
Everything is put into serving bowls and people help themselves. That way no one is overwhelmed with sprouts:o but my children do eat them and always have. For the first time this year I started off the roast pots and parsnips on Christmas Eve and then finished them on the day. That was the only way I could fit enough into the oven:o People just ate what they wanted but there was very little left at the end. Beans on toast for Christmas Dinner :eek:True wealth lies in contentment - not cash. Dollydaydream 20060 -
My sister had beans on toast for Xmas as she was volunteering at Crisis and they ran out of christmassy type food. It didn't hurt her any!Mortgage Free since January 2018!0
