Claiming grandad's insurance...but no contract

OK, so my grandad passed away a few minutes after New Year and we need to start getting organised tomorrow. We know he was insured but we can't find his contract/proof of insurance.

If we take a deathg certificate to the insurance people with proof that we are his family will we be able to claim his insurance? My dad is his nearest relative and needs to pay for funeral costs etc.

Will his lawyer maybe have contracts etc? I know some people entrust documents for safekeeping but am not sure.

Thanks

If you know who the insurers are, they shouldn't insist on you finding the paperwork. If you don't know, his bank statements may help you to find out.

His bank will provide the cash for the funeral out of the money in his bank account once they have the death certificate and the funeral bill.

The insurance company will require probate to be obtained for his Will, which you may still find.

If you know who the insurers are then you just need to phone them with the details and they will send you any forms you need to complete. If he left a Will then the executor should do this and depending on the value of the insurances, they may insist on you obtaining a Grant of Probate before paying anyway. If not and the Will stated for example that he left everything to his wife (or whoever) they will ask for evidence of their identity.
