Ring wetdecs. Buy his stuff. Do as he instructs for your type of job. Done.

One last question. My space is 1700x800. Should I get biggest one that would fit? Or should I get up to 1200 as the screen would also be 1200. Thanks.

Thanks for all your help Andy and ds.

I managed to get a Tuff2 tray on ebay :-p. Have been keeping a low profile in case anyone else on here was looking for one too. :-D

Here's what I've learnt from my research.

    1) Avoid getting the cheapest tray. They will need proper supporting (full plywood under the board etc) otherwise it will flex. Better off getting a strong tray (like Tuff 2 or Showerstone) and also support it fully.

    2) Get the membrane tanking kit. There are two types of membrane. One for the walls which is just a sheet of membrane. One for the floor which is two layers so allows lateral movement. This means (according to the manufacturer) you don't need a layer of ply on top of your floor board. It is floorboard-adhesive-membrane-adhesive-tiles. This obviously keeps the floor thickness lower and so less of a step from your other rooms.

    3) Get a tray a bit bigger than your shower screen. This is advice from a wetroom supplier. This allows for moving to tray during install to avoid joist. Also to ensure water that escape your screen area to flow back down with the tray.

    4) You can't use tiles smaller than 50x50mm on the cheaper trays, as this will potentially break the tray. On the more expensive ones I think the size limit is around 30x30mm (correct me if I'm wrong).

    5) Shop around. Bargains occasionally crops up on ebay. Also shop around for the screen. 8mm glass is very common and prices are very competitive. 10mm glass is almost double the price of 8mm. I'm not sure for what benefit as they are all safety glass anyway (I'll tell you when mine arrives!). Again, there are bargains around if you search for it.

    Hope that helps someone future.

You still need ply under the floor membrane, Laterial is across the floor and the membrane does not compensate for bounce in the floor

False economy buying from Ebay, The trays never come with a trap and these at trade price are £95+vat!

  • Thanks Andy. Definitely food for thought regarding bouncy floor board.

I managed to get the drain for £70 all in from wetroomdirect.net . Had to delete the post yesterday cos I realised it was much cheaper than others on the net and as you said, normally around £95+VAT. I received the drain today and it is the drain with the stainless steel top, for £70 delivered (next day delivery). Another bargain!

The ebay tray is just a one-off, as they are not normally found on ebay. However worth a look if you are after something, as bargain like mine occasionally comes up. The tray don't normally comes with the trap at most sites I've looked anyway.
