Did you get a discounted installation/connection in October 2010? If so, that could account for the contract being more than 12 months.

In any case, you're leaving after only 10 months - so some breach of contract charge will apply anyway.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Doesn't matter what length contract YOU want - its BT's t & cs that matter!! Suspect you are tied in for at least 18 months from last October.

If you commenced BT Vision around April this year then that is also a minimum 12 or 18 month contract, in addition to your phone and broadband contract.
You are aware that BT Vision will not work with Sky broadband? It requires that you have BT broadband.
I don't think that £200 will include your ETC for BTV-which will anyway cease to work when you switch ISP's.
Suggest that you log into your online account and check what you have agreed to.

  • right been on to bt asked them if the can send me a copy of the contract and they said sorry we dont have any copys of a contract as it was vebal agrement so what do i do about that and is it a valid/leagal conrtact if i never singed for it because i still am convinced i asked for 12 month but they still say its 24 months

It makes no difference, a verbal contract is just as binding in law as a written one. And on top of that, you have already accepted the T&C's (which would have stated the contract length) by using the service for 9 months.

IIRC, BT charge for the BT Vision box if the contract is terminated early - that probably accounts for the £200 charge.

But if you didn't have BTV until April, you are in contract for that until at least next April. BTV contracts are either 12 or 18m I think.
When you signed up with Sky, you must have know that an ETC would apply, as you were only 10 months into a contract that you thought was 12m for line rental and broadband, and only 3m into for BTV!
I suggest you ask BT to break down the ETC for each of the 3 contracts that you are still in (line rental, broadband, and BTV).

Exactly,we don't know if BT Vision was taken as an addon to the phone/broadband package or if indeed a new contract was started for an upgrade including BT Vision.
