Book in advance or late deal?

I always book my holidays well in advance. This year I had came to the conclusion that we wouldn't be able to afford to go on holiday.
Low and behold we have managed to save up enough money for a holiday and decided to go for a late deal instead.
I had priced holidays in January and the cheapest was £300 pp for our chosen destination. Now with 6 weeks to go to the same resort the cheapest is £450pp.

Should I hold out as long as possible and hope this come down? What does everyone else do every year? Book well in advance or wait to the last minute?

Prices tend to be lowest about a month before departure so I would hold out for a few more weeks then book. However, you will get less choice the longer you wait.
