Find out if your car has a timing belt, or a chain. If it's a chain, it should last the lifetime of the engine. Skoda (VW group) do have some engines with timing chains. My 1997 Felicia 1.3 had one.

If it's a belt, as others have said, it must be changed at the correct intervals.
