Anyone been to NY lately and can advise on how much spends i should be taking.. for myself and hubby, 5 nights, dont plan to do any shows.. so for eats, and entrance into some tourist places.. not for shopping as i have a seperate fund for christmas shopping.. its generally just eating / beers etc.
I was thinking $1000.. is that enough ?

Hubby and I went to NY for one week for our honeymoon and we took £500 spending money (so roughly $1,000) and that was plenty. We didn't do shopping or shows so the money went on food, drink, getting around and going to the tourist attractions.0

I take a bit more just to be on the safe side, you never know you might see something there you really want to buy or a show to go to etc. my cousin has been before a few times and says that money just slips through your fingers over there.0

When I go to America, I usually take $50/day spending money for food and other incidentals, I do not alway spend the full allowance so it carries forward to the next day and as the week goes on, I usually find my pot has grown big enough to give me extra for souvineers and such like.
This figure does not include entry fees though as I tend to put them on my CC.0 -
For touristy things take a look at this -

I used it a few years ago when I went to NY. Saw 4 - 5 things a day and saved a bunch.
Pre-plan what you want to see and concentrate on a certain area of Manhattan each day to maximize what you see.
The other 2 days can be spent walking around just looking at the city. I walked about 15 miles a day!
Food wise - Look out for Happy Hours. There are lots of tourist traps obviously so shop around...
Alcohol is always expensive when eating out.0 -
We took about $1500 when we went for 5 nights last year, and it was plenty. We shopped canny with this ( thanksgiving sales and had a fair few nice evenings/meals out.0

When I go to NYC, my overall budget for beer, meals, beer, a bit of shopping, and some beer, is around $200 per day. Did I mention I some drink beer?0

A lot will depend on exactly what you want to do. Most of the tourist sites arent that expensive and a lot of the hidden and not so hidden gems are free. Getting about is also very cheap.
Food wise again it will depend on where and what you want to eat. Meals in and around times square are average in taste and expensive on the wallet. Bimble across to Hells Kitchen (basically a couple of blocks from the square) and you will get a much better mix of diners and restaurants with better food and much cheaper on the wallet. Similarly if you want to go to china town for food you will pay probably a quarter what you would pay elsewhere.0 -

Please, please , please buy a Metro Card when you are there and use the subway and buses ................ alot cheaper and more interesting and really dead simple ! Do the tourist sites you want to do in your own time and you won't feel under pressure to rush around and get your money's worth.
We always take some cash to pay for coffee, bagels, muffins etc and of course beers (Plenty of beers !) We use our CC to pay at all the attractions, theartres and bloomin shopping !!!!!!
People on the NYC thread will help you more ............ David0 -
Yes definitely get a metro card.
I take about $150 cash and put everything else on my card to earn nectar points or airmiles. I dont want to be carrying thousands of $$ around.0
