Your fronting, if you are the owner and main driver the policy should be in your name. It's a shame that she's taken you off but there is not much you can do through the insurance company. You cannot have two policies on the same car. If the car is registered to you and is owned by you then I would either tell her she cannot drive it and when she does report her to the police or wait till the tax is up (if soon) and refuse to renew it until she transfers the insurance to your name.

Of course he could insure himself to drive ANY car, but that won't be cheap, and we know that as he's been fronting, he doesn't like spending money.

Thanks to all. Bouncydog and Inside Insurance, have assumed correctly. As you can see some here have said that the same car cannot have 2 policies, but you seem to be saying that it is ok (with some caveats). The insurer of another car that I have via their offshore call centre will not insure it. I spoke to the legal help advisors on this policy and they did not seem to know whether it was illegal to have 2 policies on the same car. Does anyone know the definitive answer?

It's illegal. Multiple insurance means multiple payouts, and would almost certainly be used for fraud.

Must find out why my Wife has 5 insurance policies on my life though! Never mind, it's time for tea. Hope it doesn't taste of almonds again!

Car's can have two policies otherwise buying a car would become pretty difficult. Although the same person having two policies on the same car will cause problems if you have an accident.

You mean two drivers can have each have a policy on the same vehicle. You can't insure a car twice.

Can't believe the statement even so, as the insurance want to know who is the primary driver, and they can't both be. If you are not the primary driver, then you must be a named other.

As i said, a car can be insured by different people at the same time or it'd make buying a car impossible. The seller will often still have the car insured incase it gets stolen and the new buyer will insure it so they can collect it so policies will overlap. Plus when i insured mine this year i got the dates wrong which meant it over lapped by a week; i phoned the new insurer to change it and was told i'd have to cancel and re-insure, but it'd have the usual admin fee.. When i asked if it'd cause any problems being insured twice they told me that it would if i crashed / needed to claim.

Ah! Now I get you. :)
But of course they can't both claim for an accident after handover of the vehicle.
  • Most insurance policies have a clause that you can claim under their policy only if there is no other policy in existence which you could validly claim under. If you had two policies for the same vehicle, it would be permanent ping-pong if you needed to make a claim.

The policy that your wife has in her name, with you as an (ex) named driver is invalid anyway, as you are the owner and having her as the main driver is "fronting" and illegal. Cancel it (or let her keep on paying something for nothing if you like) and take out your own policy. It will be the only policy in existence that you (as owner) have taken out. If you want to avoid any awkward questions though, I'd forget about any no claims you might have built up as a named driver on your own car... ;)

If she has taken your name off the policy I don’t see how you can drive it at all. Either you are on the policy or you aren’t.
I'm assuming the policy is with Saga, as they are the only insure (AFAIK) who offer the "emergency" cover.

Or just get one of your mates to boot you in the knackers, then phone them pretending to be the wife..... just make sure you get the call over with before your voice returns to normal.

yep, and even more interesting, the Saga policy also gives driving other cars cover everywhere in the EU rather than just in the UK
