Filter lanes and right of way question.

I've been in this situation recently. Twice. And it was confirmed by both the Police and my insurers.
If you're merging into the left hand lane from the right hand lane, as directed by the sweeping arrows in the middle of your lane (because it's closing), then traffic in the left hand lane has right of way.
I got hit by a woman merging into my lane (her lane was closing), she was adamant that I had to give way to the right, but the Police Officer told us different. She then tried to make a claim on her insurance, and my insurance sided with me because she was the one changing lanes.0 -

Car a is now running out of road so had to start pulling into the left hand lane. Car b has to drop back to allow car a into the left lane but remains very close to car a.
Car a then stops and car b hits the rear of car a off side.
Who is at fault and who would be liable in the event of an insurance claim?
Thanks
I'd say both are at fault but don't understand how car b hits car a on it's offside.14 Projects in 2014 - in memory of Soulie - 2/140 -

I find it quite disturbing that people on here can't grasp this simple concept.
It really isn't hard and has always been the case.
It seems to me that if someone gets the wrong information or misunderstands this when they're learning, then nothing will change their minds no matter how much evidence or proof you provide, they will be adamant.
Tinks has provided the answer several times together with references to the HC and yet STILL people want to argue the toss.
No wonder there are so many accidents. You have been reading.....another magnificent post by garethgas :beer:0 -
If everyone just f*ckin' chilled out and realised that two lanes merging into one after traffic signals helps us ALL get through the lights a bit quicker and showed a bit of patience towards each other then there wouldn't be a problem. The alternative would be single file traffic all the way into work and back during rush hour, now wouldn't that be fun.................NOT!0

Wrong..... Because clearly according to the fictional highway code that exists in most people's heads, using both lanes makes you a rude, arrogant and aggressive QUEUE JUMPER!!!!! :rotfl:“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Of course, because of this attitude people have, it allows you to be exactly that in many situations. Lots of single lane SC roads around here that widen to two lanes for the lights, then narrow again, and since nobody will ever queue in the right hand lane, you can go there, put your foot down when the lights change and indeed skip the entire queue.
If people would learn to merge properly then people would queue at such a junction properly and thus the blatant queue jumping I just described would be impossible.
It just doesn't make sense to me. When you go to Tesco and there are two checkouts, one with 8 people queueing and one with 1 person queueing*, do you get in the longer queue because to use the short one is pushing in?Gordon_Hose wrote: »If only zip filtering was taught on a test.
I would hope it would be taught before the test rather than during it TBH
*Lets assume that the person in the short queue is not clutching 200 coupons in one hand and a chequebook in the other.0 -
Well yes. Just taught then lol0

Wow, opened a can of worms here didn't I.
Just to clarify, I was in the right hand lane in a queue of traffic,
We were all doing about 10-15mph. So that kind of blows tinks theory that I was driving mad at 30mph trying to jump the queue.
I don't know why you have such a chip on your shoulder tinks but you need to chill abit.
Maybe you're one of those idiot drivers who can't stand anyone to get ahead of them and would rather cause an accident instead of being sensible.
The fact is, I was well ahead of that car, I was by the side of the van in front. When I dropped back to pull behind the van the car behind purposely closed the gap so I couldn't filter in. Had they not of done this there would not have been an accident.
They were at fault for being aggressive in the first place. The reason I stopped is because they were tailgating and shouting abuse, that is why they hit me when I stopped because they were to close.0 -
Why did you stop because they were tailgating and shouting abuse?
Or did you brake test them, and that's why they hit you?0
