Lost DVLA road tax renewal letter!

Hi there,

I received my renewal form through the post a few weeks ago and I came to get it sorted and the letter appears to have gone walkies.

What do I do to renew if I don't have the form?!

Help! :o...

thank you in advance

Phone the DVLA as soon as possible....

Oh and so you don't look silly, it's not "road tax" (abolished in 1936) it's Vehicle excise duty (VED), it's got nothing to do with the roads whatsoever.

If you have the log book (which you should do) then you can do it online.

You don't need to renewal letter.

You can do it online without it, you just need to provide extra information such as your V5c (logbook) reference number. Or you can go to a post office with all your documents and they will do it.

theres an awful lot of silly people around then. i have never heard anyone mention their 'vehicle excise duty' although i do realise that is the correct term, usually its 'car tax' people mention, unless thats just my part of the world

Corrected that for you and I agree ;)

That's not to say the OP is stupid, it's just that if you raise a child to think that dogs are elephants, they'll go into life calling dogs elephants until someone corrects them.

So effectively the problem is a lot of old timers telling later generations that its called "road tax" because that's what their father/mother used to call it and their father/mother before that. Hard to break that sort of cycle unless your the sort of person who doesn't automatically take things on face value.

The reason I make a point of it though, is because the phrase "get some f**king road tax" is often hurled abusively toward cyclists and in fact the very fact that most people call it road tax, does generate animosity toward the above group of road users.

A very good modern example would be the term "dongle" which thanks to mobile phone salesmen and TV advertising, is now used for practically anything you plug into a USB port.

A little OTT (sorry OP) :p

There must be a hell of a lot of silly people around then as the vast majority of people I know still refer to it as road tax. But if your pedantry gives you joy, you carry on. The rest of us prefer to have a bit of silliness in our lives:D
