Indonesia: Volcanoes

I'm considering going to Indonesia in September, and I'd really like to see a volcano erupting. I've been on a website that lists a few that are currently erupting, but I'm not entirely sure what they mean by that. Are there any volcanoes you can go up to on any day and be pretty much guaranteed to see an eruption? Preferably also see lava. Basically, the more chance I have of dying, the more I want to go.

Also, if you've got any general advice on what to do in Indonesia, feel free to share. We're interested in wildlife (Komodo), diving for amateurs, perfect beaches and general hiking with great photo opportunities.

If a volcano is actively erupting (i.e lava coming out, increased gas release, earthquakes) it is not safe to go to the crater without special protection. There may not be anything to see anyway.

Some volcanoes have webcams which will give you an idea of what can be seen from a distance, which can be checked nearer the time. So google.

Mount Kerinci has the most 'predicable' eruptions but it is mainly steam so no lava.

If you really want lots of lava you best bet is to look for erupting shield volcanoes which have lots of lava and are 'safer' than others. Not sure how many Indonesian volcanoes are this type. I personally recommend Hawaii for volcano spotting.
