Faulty XBox 360 - Woolworths

Options
Bought my son an XBox 360 for Christmas and for the last couple of days it has been playing up - puts a game in and screen reads "put this game in an Xbox 360". Dug out the Woolworths receipt to return for an exchange and it says to call a technical helpline in the first instance "who will resolve the issue or verify if the item is faulty". He has done all this but now they have said he will need to send it back for a repair - they will send a label and arrange for it to be picked up. All of this will take up to 3 weeks. It clearly states "If the item is faulty you will be issued with a Returns Authorisation Number (RAN). Please record this number on the inside fold over and bring it back into store with your receipt and all components and we will be happy to exchange or refund." - the Xbox is clearly faulty but they will not issue him with this returns authorisation number so he can take it back for an exchange. Its only 8 days old so why should we settle for a repair? This item wasn't bought from their website if that makes any difference.

It also states on the back of the receipt "IF A PRODUCT IS FAULTY AND IS RETURNED WITH PROOF OF PURCHASE, WE WILL BE HAPPY TO EXCHANGE OR REFUND"

Any advice on what I can do would be appreciated or do I just have to send it for a repair - not happy if this is what I have to do though or should I contact Trading Standards?

  • hiya my uncle is on his 4th xbox360 in a year and abit of ownership he has have them collected and sent to microsoft (but they do normally give you a free game for the wait!) but in your case if you have had it less then 28 days i would just return it as faulty and get your money back and buy elsewhere
I have enough money to last me the rest of my life, unless I buy something

I would have thought that the x box would be classed as "Inherently Faulty". You are rejecting faulty goods well within a reasonable time frame and dont have to accept a repair of any type.

Go back down there and make a noise. Its up to them to sort this out, not you.

We have noticed a similar problem with our 360.It may not be relevant to you, but there is a glitch on the machines. If you have just been playing an original Xbox game (the old xbox that is, not the 360) and then put a 360 disc in, the machine will say you have to put it in a 360 console.
If you reset the machine, it will then play it.

You may have a genuinely faulty console, but I just thought I'd mention this in case this is the cause.

He has 3 360 games and the problem seems to be when he changes one for the other. Hasn't been able to play 2 of the games at all today.

I had a similar experience with Woolworths over a Gameboy Micro.
Went in store said phone this number blah blah blah, phoned the number, they said phone another number, nintendo were never there... long story short went back in to Woolworths, said this item is broke give me another.
Woolies said phone this number, I said I did phone that number, wollies asked were is your returns number, told them they didnt give me one (all true i might add), they still wouldnt back down so I told them to phone the number! Which they did, had the same hassle I did for about 10 minutes on the phone and then said, we will return it as unsuitable/unwanted cus you dont need a returns number, here is your money back.

Result - Woolies had no more in stock so went to Curries and asked them to price match my recipt for -£29.99 (they were looking £50) no problems, even got a pink one for my niece she was well chuffed.

Have you actually tried to go back to the branch where you bought it for an exchange or refund? If not, then this is what I would do and point out the bit that states that they will exchange it

Ring up the store, ask for the name of the "Store Manager."Go to the store and tell the staff under the sale of goods act you wish to have an exchange/refund as the goods are faulty. If they disagree, ask for the Store Manager by name.Dont be fobbed off with anyone else who calls themselves the duty Manager ,if asked.(although the Assistant Store Manager would be ok).If this is what you want.

My son took the bull by the horns went off to woollies with his faulty Xbox 360 ready to stand his ground that the machine was faulty and wanted it exchanged there and then. He was amazed he had no problems at all.

So what's all that rubbish on the fold over thingy about needing an RAN before it can be exchanged/refunded. Had to pay the cost of a 15 min phone call for nothing

Anyway, problem solved ~ for now it seems, rather worringly, ~ but thanks to everyone for their advice.
