Selling jewellery?

Firstly I apologise if I have posted this in the wrong place but I looked through all the subforums and couldn't see where we be most appropriate to post it. If it needs moving then that' fine.
Following the breakdown of my marriage I have some very nice jewellery to sell but I don't know where I would get the most money for it. It's all nice jewellery but the sentiment behind it has long gone.
I have a platinum 3mm wedding band, a platinum, solitare diamond engagement ring, a Pandora bracelet with several charms, a silver rotary watch, a silver earring and necklace set. I think that's it for now., but there might be more I can't remember.
So anyway, where would be the best place to get rid of them?

Ebay, pawnbrokers (but shop around to get a good idea of the true value)......0

A jeweller who deals in second-hand jewellery?
Pawn shop?
eBay, Gumtree?
Classifieds in local newspaper?
Classifieds in Jewellery magazines (if such a thing exists)0 -
If you live anywhere near Birmingham, sell it in the Jewellery Quarter, very fair prices and people you can trust. I know...I did it.Normal people worry me.0

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. I agree with Hobsons Choice. I live in Birmingham and the Jewellery Quarter is very good for that sort of thing
Edited to say that when I was there recently I asked about selling a diamond ring and they would only offer me the scrap metal price for the gold in it, the diamond was completely disregarded. When I asked why they said that no one was having much luck selling rings at the moment (whether they can't sell them or can't get the money they want for them I don't know) so I'd say be careful regarding any rings you might want to sell - it may be worth holding onto them for a while longer yet so you could get a better price in the future when diamonds are a bit more in demand0 -
You might also try getting an estimate from a real bricks an dmortar auction houise. However if you decide to sell it there check their fees, they make ebay look cheap.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I was selling some of my mother's jewellery recently, and was advised that, at the moment, prices are relatively low (economic climate, etc), and that I'd get around 30% more if I waited a while. Obviously, increase not guaranteed, timescale could be anything... But, he was a jeweller friend of the family, and gave honest valuations of all the items - including one or two he said it'd be worth getting an expert opinion on - and it was worth it!
So, I'd recommend independent jewellers in your area. Get several valuations, and let each jeweller know you are getting valuations from others. Make sure you have a record of each piece if they want you to leave them with them, ideally digital photos/video.
Sorry about the marriage. When you've sold the stash for a huge fortune, treat yourself to some luxury - spa weekend? Weekend trip to Spain? Around the World ticket? Or an evening out at the pub with a friend... depends if you find a gem amongst the gems!0 -
I'd avoid ebay if I were you. Quite apart from potentially having to deal with two out of my three nightmare customer groups (brides, pregnant women and men buying gifts), there are just too many ways for the unwary to be scammed and you could easily lose both the money and the jewellery.0

I recently helped sell my grandmas old jewellery. The only thing of value was the scrap metal despite some of the pieces looking very pretty. So we kept the ones we couldn't bring our selves to melt down and sold the rest. There were diamonds and various other stones but we were warned we would not get paid for them so we removed them ourselves before hand. They were the old style cut of diamonds but even so - no value at all tells you that jewellery is really a very emotionally based market.
We got 95% of the scrap value of the gold which was pretty fair - should have waited though - it has gone up a lot in value since then! We were told they pay 95% value and then sell at 98% to a refiner. Very small margins indeed.0
