Self-Drive Ski Holidays

Hi all, new to this board

Looking for some advice on self-drive ski holidays.

Husband and I go skiing/boarding every year but this year want to try a self drive trip with 3 friends. So there will be 5 adults in total.

Ideally want somewhere cheap, close to slopes and good night life.

Thanks

    What's the attraction for self-drive?

Where in the UK are you?

In the ski resorts you have been to, have you seen or heard about people getting stuck in the snow in their cars?

I'm sure some do, we will be taking a 4x4 and will prepare for all circumstances, snow chains, shovels etc. I have also heard many people do it every year and have a great time!

    Bore off.

I drove to the Mayrhofen area in Austria few years ago. We went via Dusseldorf to pick up a mate and swap cars (Metro for Golf GTI.) Unfortunately, the mate broke his leg within 15 minutes of arriving on the slopes (worst break the doctors had seen all season) but we had no problems at all with cars or getting stuck. We drove up to the Hinterglemm glacier a couple of times and back home via the Deutsche Alpenstraße.

I like road trips too, so can see the attraction. To me the journey is part of the experience. I hate being cooped up in an aeroplane looking down on places I want to visit. The only problem is the extra time and expense. I think driving added nearly a week to the trip.
