Travel insurance - USA

I have a trip to Orlando booked for 2 weeks on 20th October (return 3rd November) and am currently looking at travel insurance before I pay for the rest of the holiday.

Going through Moneysupermarket 2 quotes catch my eye - Preferential Travel Insurance and Columbus Direct - £40 and £52 (or thereabouts).

For 2 adults and 1 child that seems very cheap - has anyone booked insurance through either of these companies? Is there something obvious I am missing as the policies seem pretty standard to me.

Any help/advice is appreciated as always!

When travelling to the USA by far the most important insurance element is medical. Check carefully for exclusions, for instance pre-existing medical conditions; and stuff like "under the influence of alcohol" which is often an exclusion with the cheaper policies. If you trip, or get hit by a car crossing the road etc after you've had a drink or 2 they could refuse to pay out if they have such an exclusion, and hospital bills in the US can be massive.

you want 10 million at least for medical, often the cheaper the policy the lower the cover, also look out for excesses, you can be hit with some large excesses on cheap policies.
  • Hi all

I'm going on holiday to Florida in September and looked everywhere for travel insurance and the best place is your bank - I have european travel insurance with my bank (Lloyds TSB) as i have a silver account but found out that if i upgraded to a gold account (which is currently £12 per month but they have a deal where you pay £7.50 for the first 2 months) you get worldwide travel insurance for you and your partner. You can always cancel it after you have been on holiday or downgrade to a lower account as there is no minimum term that you have to sign up for.

Just thought i'd share this as £7.50 for travel insurance is quite cheap for anybody planning on going to the USA!
