I have chased after the owner of dropped money, who was very grateful to have it back.

I have likewise left my mobile on the top of my car then driven away, to have someone phone my OH to advise where it was, safe and sound.

The other day though I found £5 on the pavement, I looked around and there was nobody, so I kept it because I just didn't know who had lost it. I felt kind of bad about it, even though it wasn't a large amount, but it might have been a lot to the person who lost it.

I know that if I found something that could be tracked back to an individual I would hand it in, however I wouldn't necessarily expect that if I lost something that it would be handed in intact. As other posts have said, it very much depends where you are and when.
