Directline manage your policy online..I really wouldn't!!

A bit of a long one sorry.....
So we decided that as our car was slowly reaching the end of it life we would invest in a new to us family car. After much searching of the net I found a resonably priced contender. Before buying the car I logged onto my directline policy and amended my vehicle, I was plesantly suprised that to find that there was a small premium refund. I cancelled out of the transaction and my hubby went to test drive new car.
After much negotiation a price was agreed, we arranged collection for this morning. So last night I logged onto my account again, amended the vehicle again, again the same small refund is due, set the time for this morning at 9.30am. Click through several pages agreeing to T's & C's etc, a page which says that a new payment schedule will follow in the post and one which says that from 9.30am we would be able to view the policy online. Great I think, one less thing to worry about.
Bear with me I'm nearly there!! This morning comes, we set off at 8.30am for the car dealer, sign all the paperwork make payment drive off in our new car (was probably just after 9.30am) thinking I'd timed that really well, hubby goes off to work in new car, says when you get home just check that the policy has updated, no problem I say.
So on getting home I log into my policy on to see that no change has been made and that hubby is driving car without insurance
I called directline to be told that no change had been made and rather than a refund, there was an additonal premium of approx £55 to pay!! After complaining very strongly they agreed to nil the additional premium but to receive the refund I needed to 'prove' that this was what I was offered, as I foolishly didn't take a screen shot, I have no way of doing this
.
I'm not that bothered about the money (it was only £35, but it would have gone some way towards a tank of petrol) its more the fact that we were driving without insurance  had we not checked the policy who knows how long that would have continued for!
I wonder wether to take this further or just be thankful that I checked.
