Clear Your Desk..

My wife handed her notice in to her boss on thursday, the boss sent her an email and said we will discuss it later. Just before her 11am break she was called into the boss's office, he threw the notice on the floor and shouted at her calling her 'intollerable' and then told her to clear her desk.
My wife was going to work the one month's notice period.
My wife has been paid for all of the day's work that she has done but we were counting on her working her notice and then moving to the new job. Now we have a gap of 2-3 weeks where she will not be working. Is there any point in persueing the company for what she would have earned during her notice period?
The other issue I have is that the boss has been very abusive from since she began in january this year. My wife has kept a reord of everything he has said and when. Sometimes it is aimed at just her, other times it is aimed at the other women she works with. One that springs to mind is that he called them Hoars for Hire. He only employs women
Opinions please, this guy is a cretin

what is the contractual notice period?
re notice period
its the same as any other part of employment
the employer has to honour the contract. they cant just dismiss her due to her giving notice (unless she is in her 1st year?)
edit,just re read
unfortunately i believe they can dismiss for any non discriminatory reason in the 1st year0 -
My wife started in January 2011, notice period is one month which she was going to work0
-
at she's only been there 7 months they can pretty much just show her the door like they have done.0

If her notice period as per her contract is a month, and the employer is not letting her work this, they must make a payment in lieu. If they don't she can apply for an unlawful deduction of wages claim from a tribunal. She needs to get something in writing - suggest she write to the employer stating that she is willing to work her notice period, but if he prefers to pay in lieu of notice that would be acceptable and asks him to confirm in writing whether he wishes her to work her notice or be paid in lieu. She needs to keep a copy of her letter and send this along with her resignation letter and any correspondence from the company with any claim. Ten to one if he gets a formal sounding letter along the lines mentioned he will pay up.
Not sure what you can do about the second bit now your wife has left, just be glad she's out of there with something else to go to0 -
Relatively simple ET claim
they need to pay the notice and outstanding holidays.
Phone up and ask when they will be paid if there is a negative response
Then lodge a formal grievence for illegal deduction of wages0 -

Potential sex discrimination/harassment claim there also assuming you have good evidence/witnesses.0 -
Thanks for the replies so far guys, my wife is speaking to HR tomorrow. I saw the list of things that he has said to the women in the office since January and there's some really horrible stuff. If I get chance I`ll have a look again and post a couple of examples, it's nearly all sexist rants0

Have any of these sexist rant been reported higher up and if not, why not.
There are still women working there who she has left behind to put up with this moron.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

If anything, get all those to HR as a final grievance. Nice guy eh?If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
if there is a notice period on the contract and she gave that notice he has to pay her in full for the notice not worked because he decided her not to !!0
