More double glazing!

Options
We have an ex-council house which has double glazing but it is well drafty and somewhat past the sell by date I think, one of the windows has a broken handlt too so won't shut properly.

We've had three quotes, one from Everest just to see what the big boys would ask.

Terrible experience, "special discount if I call the manager start at a super high price" rubbish which i thought they'd have done away with. Quote for 10 windows, Some fairly large it has to be said, tilt and turn upstairs (which we don't have as yet) with hoppers on the top £7000

Second, local firm, been around 12 years so chance they might be about to sort any warrenty issues if needed £4700 for the same thing. Product demon looks excellent custom made stuff using profile22 and some overseas glass or other, A rated windows and they'd replace all flashing and sills inside too. 10 year guarantee on all work

3rd from local joiner, £3500 for the same thing. Would use a window firm to manufactuer the things, their website is rubbish though. They do use EuroCell and also claiming A rated window and frame but only a two year guarantee.

Is it worth having the piece of mind of a 'name' coming in to do the work? We'd be at 470 a window of course but they are doign some extra work. They will not come down further and claim that only Everest really match them for quality of build.

It is a push for us though so does anyone have any thoughts on this? Could do with an independent view please!

try the GGF web site www.ggf.org.uk their members are vetted and generally offer good quality products, If security is important then check the police web site secured by design www.sbd.org.uk they too only list products with enhanced security, or bsi members or BBA members. nothing wrong with the big boys, products need to be good as they produce lots of them, aftersales service may be a let down if they subcontract the fitting or expect the fitters to return to finish off snagging (fitters dont earn anything for fixing problems so its never a priority)

smaller local companies may make or may buyin from a trade manufacturer. they rely upon others to make windows but often provide a better, quicker service if something goes wrong.

There are no right wrong answers until you decide the things you consider important on your windows. there are other sites I would recommend too, check my earlier posts

Buying quality goods which last, should be an investment that saves money. :T
Buying cheap products which fail, wastes money and costs twice as much in the long run.

I personally don't think profile 22 matches up to Everest quality, and Eurocell definately does not. Top profiles that would match Everest/Anglian quality would be Rehau and Kommerling. Expect to pay a bit more for better quality profile, but it would still be less than the national companies.

I have been fitting rehau profile windows for 20 years and still, at the moment think it is the best profile out there.

Strange that because rehau profiles were taken off the tender list for manchester and salford councils due to colour fastness guarantees not being honoured . We too fitted rehau for 14 years ,Kommerling for 3 years (our fabricator went bankrupt) until we were switched to the DARK side and Profile 22 by a companies guarantee that actually means something . Rehau fabricators are 10 a penny in north west and so i know i can buy them cheaper but wont because i have seen the LIGHT . Do you actually know whos profile everest and anglian actually use ? because they dont make it themselves

Just found this on the Anglian site which looks like they make their own.

No the quality and strength of the uPVC can differ greatly between companies. Only Anglian uPVC is Anglian UPVC. Our unique formula ensures optimum colour and brightness. At Anglian we pride ourselves of the quality and care we take manufacturing our PVCu windows. We make our own UPVC and we do not source it elsewhere ensuring complete control over quality and supply. When it comes to manufacturing, Anglian has its own state-of-the-art manufacturing plants. Our extrusion plant is one of the most technically advanced in Europe, and produces the UPVC profiles from raw polymer materials, giving us greater quality control and keener pricing. We have our own glass plant ensuring quality and self sufficiency, we also process our own sealed units to exacting specifications, and even toughen glass where the orders dictate.
