Deceased persons accounts

Hi,

When a person dies how is it possible to find out what institutions they had accounts with in order to inform the solicitor dealing with the estate and will.

Thanks

I've had to do this myself recently being a sole Executor for my f-i- l's estate. It does feel like being nosy and prying but in my case I went methodically through all the papers and records which were available in his flat. Fortunately the paperwork was there and I knew he had accounts with HSBC but on going through everything I found an old Yorks B.S. account, some 40 year old Premium Bonds and a very old Life Assurance Policy etc. If there's others not documented then I don't know how that information can be found.
If there is an easier way, possibly too late for me now, I'd still like to know. If there's a massive hidden undeclared "stash" somewhere that takes the estate over Inheritance Tax threshold then I'm sure HMRC would like to know too!

    Hi

You could try www.mylostaccount.org.uk. You can search all institutions and they have a certain time to respond to you. I don't think you can use this for premium bonds or insurance policies though, just bank accounts.
