BT Contract Extended!!

Hi (first time post here)

My BT contract has been automatically extended for another twelve months on 01/08/2011 - to get out of this I will have to pay £5.50 per remaining month!!!

I have had no letter or communication from BT regarding this, I phoned BT India today and spoke to two unhelpful people who informed me that I need to give 14 days notice that I want to change my price plan, however, I received my bill on 25/07/2011 - which is less than 14 days!!

BT India are progressing my complaint - so I can see this going nowhere.

Has this happened to anybody else and was it easy to rectify?

  • There are two types of plan.

One has some free calls, and in exchange for that, everytime the contract reaches the anniversary point it then renews for the same period (e.g. another 12 months).

The other doesn't have the free calls, and so is not renewed for another year - it's just month to month. More flexible, but fewer free calls.

If you have the former, then you need to put a reminder in your diary and contact them before the rollover point to change to the latter if you don't want to stay for another year.

It isn't up to them to "invite" you to do this. It's up to you to remember.

You should have been made aware of this when you changed to the free calls plan, OR if it was a new line a year ago, you should have been offered the choice of which you wanted at sign up and been made aware of the benefit + lockin. In both cases you then need to note when it will renew and act accordingly.

So whether or not it should have extended for another year depends on which plan you were on.

They are indeed supposed to write to you or email, but it frequently doesn't seem to happen.
However if you are on an auto-renewing contract then BT are not obliged to remind you, it's your responsibilty to cancel before the cut-off if you wish to do that.

This is from the BT website:

At the end of each 12 month minimum period the contract will be automatically renewed for a further 12 month minimum period unless you tell us otherwise before the renewal date. We will write to you the month before the renewal date to remind you of this. You cannot downgrade during the minimum period or any renewable minimum period. If you upgrade to the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan your contract term will continue. If you would like to move onto the Unlimited Anytime Plan you may do so by taking up an Unlimited Anytime special offer or deal but a new contract term will apply. If you decide to end your contract within the 12 month minimum period, you will incur a single charge of £2.50 for each month left of the minimum period.
