What do you actually want it for?

I have a 500mb iomega one which is just USB and powered from the USB so good for travelling. I had a WD NAS but that was replaced with an Apple Timecapsule due to issues with connections always dropping out on it.

For at my desktop I have a Drobo device as it gives me external storage with RAID configurations and a higher speed connection than USB 2

Just want it too store music and photos on,would probably in all honesty never come close to filling it,but the 1tb ones are not that much dearer than a 500gb one,so thought best to get a 1tb!!!

I like the WD Elements drive (but then I've not used any other to compare)
For the difference in price you may want to consider the 2TB model. It's surprising how easy it is to fill them these days.

I had problems with a Western Digital drive, but its Seagate replacement works well.

Not the biggest statistical sample, but it's Seagate for me.

Why buy 1TB when you don't need half that?

I'm no techie, but I wonder if the smaller USB drives might be more reliable.

Have used a lot of WD for a long time, even put a bigger one into my Sky box - but I digress !

I got a External HDD for myself a few weeks ago:-

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Elements-Desktop-External/dp/B002E7HEVU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312296247&sr=8-1

Makes the IOMEGA alongside of it sound like a cement mixer :D
  • I use a couple of 500GB Western Digital Elements portable USB external drives for backup purposes....no problems so far.

When I was doing the research on suitable drives a year or so ago Seagate were assosciated with 'problems' with their baracuda drives which is why I avoided them - probably all blown over and sorted by now.

I could have got a WD 1TB but decided to avoid "cutting edge" stuff which might be more problematic than the smaller and more 'stable' 500GB version (I'm an engineer - i think like this!)

Settled on a 500gb 2.5 Seagate FlexGo,small enough to fit in the pocket and usb powered!!!!!!

putting photos and important data on any one drive is risky if it's your only copy

a portable drive might be more suitable if you don't have vast amounts of data, smaller, no need for mains power, less to go wrong
