Buying from a butcher

Due to a problem with a shrink-wrapped ham shank that I'd bought a couple of weeks ago, I sent OH to our local butcher this morning.
His shanks (hock/hough) were £1.99 each or 2 for £3.00 - excellent vfm.
One has made a HUGE (6.5lt) SC full of 'shank stew' (like scouse but with shank meat instead of shin beef) which will provide meals for tonight and lots left over for freezing in 1kg margarine tubs.
The other one will become a 'same-sized' pot of Pea & Ham Soup tomorrow - again will have some for evening meal and remainder will be frozen in 1kg margarine tubs - I've got piles of the darn things.

Our local farm shop butchers is wonderful! The prices are similar to Tesco value even and the quality is incredible in comparison. One day I might be more organised...........

Yes, check out independent butchers. There are some lousy ones of course (avoid meat vans on markets), but they are usually cheaper than you think and miles ahead of supermarkets on quality. Good ones will answer questions and can tell you about what they sell. I love our local butcher; they're in the next village ( a huge 1.5 miles away!) and have been going for over 250 years!
The quality of the meat is amazing, to the point where if we can't get meat from them, we don't have meat - simples! I think the only things they don't produce themselves is the chicken, and that's local and free range. Everything is hung for 28 days, and they started making their own salami, chorizo etc last year and it's gorgeous. They also smoke a lot of their own things, so you can have oak smoked chicken breast, smoked cheese, you name it.
Also, what I think is so lovely, is that mum, dad and two children work together in the shop and on the farm, and we're now seeing they children's children grow up and begin to make an appearance on odd days in the shop too - it's proper old fashioned :T

My butcher doubles as a green grocers, I spent £46 & got cabbage, mushrooms, mince, a chicken, bacon, blade end half lamb shoulder, gammon joint, sausages, shin beef. I use them regularly & find them good value.

I am ashamed to say that I never use my local butcher but just yesterday I was walking past and was their sign up for a meat pack for £22.50. I cant remember exactly what was in it (the only thing I didnt like was that there seemed to be no chicken) but it seemed really good value!! I also know that they have a very good reputation so I am seriously considering a visit this month.Emma

I think local butchers, like every business / market vary a lot
I always supported my local butcher until I bought a Christmas meat pack from him. When I collected, on Chritmas eve, as well as the fresh beef etc as advertised the turkey was a frozen Bernard Matthews jobby I could have bought from any supermarket at far less cost
He eventually ceased tradingGardener’s pest is chef’s escargot0 -
Hiya.
I am a freelance/student journalist and am doing an article on the price of fruit, veg, meat and poultry in supermarkets vs markets and butchers.
I wonder if you could help me?
Basically, I need to get a really clear idea of the prices of these things from markets and butchers from around the country and didn’t know if any of you knew the prices of said products from your local area?
The easiest way for me to compare is by KGs.
If anyone does know prices from their area and could tell me on this thread, or by private message, I would be so grateful!
I also have a 1 minute questionnaire on the topic – if you get the chance, please do take a look☺
TIA
