Tesco

I purchased a laptop from Tesco on 5/3/11 which developed a fault wherein when you try to boot up the laptop, it just goes to a white screen - after 100 minutes on phone to Dell they arranged collection last Friday - took day off work they did not turn up!
Phoned consumer direct today they told me to quote Sale of goods act 1979 which I did,
I telephoned Tesco 0845 No this morning and had a guy, not at the store I was trying to get hold of... telling me I had to prove it was faulty!!! I said 'No you have to prove it!' He was really rude, I put the phone down in the end.
After spending most of this morning on the phone to Tesco they now say they will replace my laptop - but I have to loose £80 I spent on microsoft office, I have said no way am I ending up out of pocket, I took a day off work on friday and lost money waiting for Dell to collect...
Does anyone know where I stand on this issue?
Please

How are you losing £80, Surely you bought office and it came as a disk.
or downloaded as an image file just burn it to disk.

So if you bought it at staples, You will have a disk whats the problem, Just reinstall it when you get the new laptop.

It is not a disk, it is just a number once it has been used once you cannot use it again, end of...
  • I bought office many many moons ago - I've had 3+ computers since and installed it on each one with no problem using the 1st code I bought.

If you are only using the software on ONE machine this is allowable. I'm not sure how you go about it but perhaps there is someway to notify Microsoft that the laptop the code has been used on is no longer working and has been sent back so they can reactivate the code or give you another one to use when you reinstall it.

See these two links that validate you CAN move the software from one to the other:

I have office 2007 and you can buy a microsoft office disk for up to 3 computers at any one time

this comes from micorsoft office site

Product Key Cards are similar in many ways to the Office 2007 Medialess License Kits (MLKs).They are designed for use with new PCs preloaded with Office 2010, and include a 25-character Product Key that can be used by the end user to activate one PC preloaded with Office 2010. Product Key Cards do not include a disc; however, a backup download is available for reinstallation on the same PC. The Product Key Card license type is not transferable to another computer.

Office 2010 Product Key Cards provide one installation for one preloaded PC only. Backup software available. Choose Microsoft® Office Home and Student 2010, Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010, or Microsoft Office Professional 2010. Customer Value
The biggest customer benefit associated with the Product Key Card is the customer experience and ease of activation on new PCs preloaded with Office 2010, since no discs are needed. Customers are up and running their new Office suites in just minutes, simply by entering the Product Key. Customers also temporarily have the ability to download a backup copy for reinstallation of the image on the same PC. Many consumers like the Product Key Cards and describe them as innovative, eco-friendly, and easy to activate.
    Partner Value
Product Key Cards allow sales of Office 2010 with new preloaded PCs at a lower everyday price, offering a compelling reason for customers to purchase Office 2010 with their new PC. Product Key Cards also create a great upsell opportunity to Traditional Discs. From an inventory perspective, Product Key Cards come in smaller packages than the Traditional Discs, so they take up less shelf space.

the option is to contact microsoft and explain what has happened and see if they will give you a new key free of charge

It depends what version of Office they have. It sounds like they have the OEM license if they didn't get a CD with it so by rights it is non transferrable going by the OEM license terms hence the normally cheaper price.
