dentistry in the health service is not even remotely like health care. Dentistry is provided on the basis we are all private practitioners sub contracted to provide care. Funding is only delivered on the basis of completions of courses of treatment and the sole generators of income are the dentists who have to pay for ALL overheads out of the money they are paid for doing the afore mentioned courses of treatment. If the course of treatment is not claimed or if no work is done then the whole practice shuts. In exchange the DOH provide guidelines on what they think is appropriate to be provided within the NHS framework and what is not.
Medicine however is not like this. Hospitals are owned by the NHS (as a generic whole encompassing body) and all staff are directly employed. If they do no work they still get paid.

To the outsider looking in dentistry is very expensive however I would say very much less than half actually goes to the dentist. Average costs are 60% of gross and often that doesnt consider lab fees for getting crowns and dentures made. We are not as a whole as greedy as the stereotype likes to suggest.
FWIW I dont know any dentists driving a bentley. I myself drive a mini, my colleagues drive a 15 year old mercedes, a 9 year old polo and a 2 year old golf. Not that it matters what people drive.

155 miles last week on the bike! 105 of those commuting - although I do take the long way home!

I keep telling Mrs T.S that the petrol money I'm saving should really go towards another really nice bike! But she say's I have 3 already, and so don't need another one! Women! That argument doesn't work with handbags!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Well I'll just stop waxing the Ferrari to answer.

Those that did have the Ferrari's during the old 400 Items of Service days were usually involved in the following:

    1) Sending in exemption claims whilst still taking a payment from the patient

    2) The Recalled Attendance fiddle

    3) The Dom Visit fiddle

    4) Claim for a two visit 10B when it was only 10a

    5) Claim for a panoral that was never actually taken

    6) Treatment padding items- A little stoning and smoothing there can add up

Of course the vast majority of NHS dentists are hard working professionals whi have now been shafted by the awful new contract. Of course Mr H from Bristol is not included in that statement because claiming exemption for a dead patient was not subtle!!!!:T
