Does anyone know how I can get a card to shop in them? Can I just pay a subscription or do you have to be a business person??

I go with my friend (who is a business owner) to makro- you have to be a business owner I think- although I'm happy for someone to correct me. Look up their websites (makro and costco)

You normally have to be trade to use them, or have access via a trade.

For example, if you have your own business you could take your own letterhead and apply using that. That should be enough for most cash and carry places.

Do remember that if you shop in a Makro style wholesaler you forfeit your consumer rights as it is a business to business transaction.

They are not really much cheaper than a supermarket for most things.

Good for boxes of crisps, jars of sweets and crates of pop though.

I've found makro to be more expensive than supermarkets in general - although they tend to do BOGOF on toilet rolls and kitchen rolls sometimes. I usually buy bin bags, chicken fillets (5kg) and toilet rolls from makro. They are good for things like cling film, tin foil, cake boards and sometimes they have really good offers on pot sets and other kitchen essentials.

I'm also a member of Costco and, again, you have to watch the prices because Asda is usually cheaper unless you are buying a ridiculous amount of something (gallons of oil). I tend to get 5kg of rice from Costco (for £6), good olive oil (6 bottles for £12) and spices are good value if you use a lot of them.

  • I have a friend who raves about Costco but I don't think she knows the true value of food. Bulk buying isn't necessarily cheaper. We used to have a card at £15 a year, but the savings weren't worth it. Alright, buying a box of 20 packets of crisps for £8 is cheap compared to the cost of one packet of crisps at 48p. However, supermarkets regularly have offers on and it's much better to get a multibag from Tescos at the right time.

Cash and Carries are good if you have a large family and for frozen meat. For example in Costco fresh section they'll quite often have a better deal than a supermarket on a huge box of fresh muffins, or a massive bag of frozen chicken breasts.

Lets face it these wholesalers aren't trying to compete with supermarkets, they are offering a particular service to other businesses.

We use them for specific items because they are either consistently cheaper and/or offer large quantities in more space efficient packaging.
