Reduced Working hours

Can anyone help, the company I work for are currently going through redunancies due to downturn in the business. I was told that my postion was safe after a decision about flexibility with my manager, 5 days later I told by HR on the stairs "Here is your letter for working part-time" I was given a letter reducing my working hours from 40hrs to 32hrs, effective from the beginning of next month (10 days notice), Is this legal and what are my rights?

    Technically, an employer cannot lawfully change your contract unilaterally, but your only options if you wish to reject the change is to write back and reject it, and risk dismissal, and possibly being re-hired on the new terms. You may be able to claim unfair dismissal in such circumstances but where the employer can show a genuine need this is unlikely to succeed or, if it does, to compensate you for losing your job.

    How long have you worked there? If you have been there less than a year you have even less choice as you have no right to claim unfair dismissal.

    Looks like you agreed flexability and now want to change you mind, did you not discuss the parameters of the flexability you were prepared to accept.

    Usual things are aceptable hours, how long any changes will be in place (eg 3months) and the options if you don't like what is offered.

    You might still able to still go for redundancy if this job is not a suitable alternative but they could claim you agreed allready so there is no redundacy.
