How long should a frost free freezer last?

In Feb 2008 I bought a Hotpoint freezer FZ175 and it has broken down. The compressor still works but the fan doesn't.

It has a 5 year guarantee but that is only for parts, not labour.

Being moneysaving I never took out the extended warranty.

So I phoned up Hotpoint and they want £99 to fix it.

I bought it online and I cannot remember where I bought it nor can I find the receipt. I only know when I bought it because I went on holiday in Jan 2008 and came back to a puddle on the floor and a defrosted old freezer so bought this freezer.

So is there any way to get my freezer fixed for free?

Your contract is with the retailer you bought the freezer from. Can you check your bank / CC statements to try to identify who you bought it from??

Not if you don't know who the retailer was or have no prrof of purchase.
  • Hmmm.

From a money saving point of view, when I buy an appliance, I assume it will last 3 years, divide the cost of buying a replacement by 36 (months!) and save that amount monthly towards replacing it if necessary - it works quite well so far - even had a few weekends away out of my 8 year old washing machine!

As for getting it repaired for free - I can't help. I know the gurantee on my fridgefreezer is parts and labour for 1 year and then just parts for year 2. That's what it says in the book that came with it.

One word of warning - a fridgefreezer repair man came out to some friends of mine and something had stopped working because of a build up of ice. Apprently, frost free freezers need de-frosting once a year to avoid them breaking down/over heating etc.....

Ive never done any maintenance to my Ocean Frost free fridge freezer and its still going strong after 15 years.

I lied, just remembered about 5 years ago the fan was noisy, i sprayed some WF40 on it and it was fine.

These extended warranties are rip offs, just put the money away that you would pay every month.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

i have had 2 hotpoint frost free fridge freezers, as already stated they do build up ice and need defrosting. the symptoms i had with them though was the temperature in the fridge and freezer fluctuating.
i have never used the 5 year part warranty, i call out a local white good repairer and it has been cheaper than hotpoint call out fee.

Daughter called me while I was on holiday to say the fridge/freezer had stopped working. She got a neighbour to come help get it going (plugged it into a different socket). When I got home I checked it all out - she had pushed the microwave back against the wall and turned off the switch of the fused spur for the fridge/freezer! :rotfl:

Doesn't help the OP, but I thought you'd like the story. :D
