I know that some charitys collect used stamps. I wondered how they make money from them?

Charities sell the stamps - I know I have donated some really interesting stamps before now (foreign ones) and the local guide dog charity were delighted because they can get more money for them.0

Are Blue Peter still collecting these ?
What about milk bottle tops ?

Used stamps - if it is a smaller charity they may have a local 'stamp expert' have a look and advise them which ones are the penny blacks, and which are the less valuable. The valuable ones will then be sold to collectors, and the more common ones will go to trading companies like Stanley Gibbons who will package them up into sets which get sold to overseas collectors. Larger charities do something similar, but it may be centralised, or 'in-house'.0

We also accept stamps direct from donors, and forward payment to charity of your choice. Terms as above.
