Best money saving tip on the planet............do it yourself, get a haynes manual and spend an hour or so familiarising yourself with the procedure and you will be amazed how easy it is. Whip the head off and take it to get skimmed (ask local garages where they go) and then go to a motor factors and buy yourself a headset, pump, belt and bolts and feel the satisfaction of knowing you have saved yourself a few hundred quid.

While I am all for people taking the time and effort to learn how to work on a car to save them money, if you haven't ever fixed a car before then replacing the headgasket is not the place to start with the spanners.

why not? its an easy basic job on a car like this and its safer if they start on a head gasket rather than on something like the braking system.;)

Oddly, that was my very first engine job I ever did. Prior to that it was only a clutch replacement, with guidance from someone else.
Then again, not everybody has the right abilities to get stuck in themselves. (Not a comment! Their talents must lie elsewhere.)
